Conductor

Sing.
Feel.
Conduct.

Joris has been conducting for more than twenty years. Thanks to his long experience and knowledge as a singer, he has grown and formed himself into a conductor who attaches great importance to the vocal aspects of music.

He searches out the meaning of the music behind the notes. A free-styling approach doesn't really interest him. Making music requires commitment from conductor and musician after all. This way we can work together on a magnificent creative process. With a healthy dose of charisma, Joris has a good feel for the ensembles with which he works and he succeeds in bringing people together with one common goal: making music with a capital M!

His vocal training and experience result in a highly acclaimed vocal conducting style which both singers and instrumentalists find very refreshing. Finding depth in music is for Joris a necessity so he approaches even well-known music as if it were new. This makes both the working process and the joy of music-making all the more intense. There is always something new to discover on a well-trodden path.

Working and exchanging ideas with inspiring conductors has a the effect of giving energy and stimulating innovation in conducting practices.

Making an ensemble sound better is one of the main goals of a conductor. As founder of the Ghent University Choir and Chamber Choir Koriolis, it has been a blessing to be able to work with the same ensemble for several years. As a conductor, Joris can therefore work on a long-term plan and vision and thus work on a recognizable sound and style. But guest conducting with other professional ensembles is very refreshing and motivating. Working at a high musical level is nourishment for the soul and gives energy.

Joris is founder and conductor of the Ghent University Choir, Chamber Choir Koriolis and the vocal collective Air4Six He is as guest conductor in demand among professional ensembles such as the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Flemish Radio Choir and Choeur de Radio France. Joris also often works with orchestra: BOENK! Brussels Young Philharmonic, La Passione Lier, Ataneres Ensemble.

Joris sees it as his task and responsibility to train the young singers of the GUK and the musicians of BOENK! and to introduce them to a diverse repertoire. The passionate way of making music in combination with a thorough technical education is a diptych to which Joris attaches great importance. In this way we can strive for a professionalism that young people can take with them into their further lives.
