Baritone

Breathe.
Speak.
Sing.

Thanks to his knowledge and command of a broad solo repertoire, Joris makes every part his own with his beautiful, flexible baritone. He pays great attention to lyricism and expression, always with the narrative character of the role in the foreground. Text, diction and language are keywords in his approach to singing. Joris is attentive to the authenticity of performance practice and presents a lyrical singing style based on Italian models. His style has earned him widespread international recognition.

As an accomplished ensemble singer, Joris also knows how to fit perfectly in a group of singers. He never stops looking for harmony and unity. He knows how to make music together without losing or giving up the individuality of his instrument. The voice is at the service of the music and the composer. Joris likes to work with conductors who challenge him and bring innovation. This stimulates his own music making and provides the necessary energy for his own projects and new ideas.

As a baritone soloist, Joris masters a wide repertoire from Bach's Passions, Cantatas and oratorios to the great Romantic and Classical oratorios and song cycles. Joris likes to take on the challenge of tackling less obvious repertoire. He sang in Mirror of Perfection by Richard Blackford, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen by Gustav Mahler. In recent years he has also performed work by Wim Henderickx, Bo Holten, Johan Duijck, Kris Oelbrandt and Jelle Tassyns among others.

Joris works with the Nederlands Kamerkoor (Peter Dijkstra), Cappella Amsterdam (Daniel Reuss), Collegium Vocale Gent (Philippe Herreweghe) and La Petite Bande (Sigiswald Kuijcken). He has worked together with choir and orchestra conductors Marcus Creed, Kaspars Putnins, Paul Hillier, James Wood, James MacMillan, Mariss Janssons, Bernard Haitink and many more.
